Welcome to Heath Park School’s innovative Independent Study Programme (ISP) designed to enhance your child’s educational journey.

At Heath Park School, we understand that academic success is closely tied to the development of personal responsibility, resilience, and strong character. Our ISP is crafted to foster these attributes, empowering students to take ownership of their learning and preparing them for future success.

Year 7 and 8 Programme Overview:

A structured programme where students will follow a consistent study schedule, completing one homework assignment each evening from Monday to Thursday. Each task is designed to last 30 minutes and will be directly related to the lessons planned for the next day. Every four weeks, students will undertake a comprehensive project assigned on a Friday. These projects are expected to take approximately 2 hours (30 minutes work each week) and will cover a variety of engaging topics.

Year 9 and 10 Programme Overview:

A structured approach to independent study, enabling KS4 students to take ownership of their learning. Our homework timetable outlines daily topics for each year group, with a recommended study time of 35 minutes per task for Year 9 and Year 10, and an expectation of an additional 45 minutes of independent study each evening for Year 11.

Year 11 Programme Overview:

In Year 11, independent study is essential for developing personal responsibility and preparing for post-secondary success. There is no formal timetable for our Year 11 students however students are expected to complete assigned tasks set by teachers alongside setting aside dedicated study time each evening. Through engaging in independent study at home students practise managing their learning outside the classroom. This responsibility aligns with Heath Park School’s vision of fostering independent, self-motivated learners that are ready for future challenges. Engaging consistently with independent study will allow students to deepen their understanding, close knowledge gaps, and build confidence, reinforcing the value of taking ownership of their educational journey.

Key Components for Success:

  1. Planner Usage: Students are required to bring their planners to every lesson. Effective use of the planner to record Independent Study Assignments is crucial.
  2. Assignment Submission: While assignments might be completed on paper or other online platforms ensure they keep track of their workload to meet deadlines. This aids in developing a sense of accountability.
  3. Workload Management: Students are encouraged to take responsibility for managing their daily assignments and the larger four-week projects. This involves effective time management and self-discipline.
  4. Constructive Feedback: Students will engage in providing constructive feedback to their peers and themselves, promoting a reflective learning environment.

Through the ISP, we aim to cultivate essential life skills such as time management, self-discipline, and accountability, ensuring our students achieve not only academic success but also the strong character needed for their future endeavours.
